DESCRIPTION
The Gouin Community Wildlife Area has 34 walleye spawning areas scattered throughout its immense territory.
In order to protect the breeders, and ensure a continued quality of walleye fishing in the years to come, the opening of these spawning grounds takes place one week after fishing is open on the rest of the reservoir. This allows for the walleye to spawn, and recover without pressure from anglers. It is thus very important to consult the official reglementation of the Québec ministry of forests, game, and parks (MFFP) to know the exact dates that the spawning grounds open each year.
DID YOU KNOW…?
In order to reproduce, walleye need a space with very particular characteristics.
The ideal walleye spawning ground has a rocky bottom of 5 to 20 cm in diameter, a current of 0.5 to 1.5m/sec, and a depth of 0.2 to 1.8 m. Walleye reproduction occurs in the spring when the water attains between 6 and 11°C.
